In my past blog posts, I’ve detailed a variety of ways to give back to the community, from fundraisers to charity walks and everything in between. But sometimes, supporting your community can be as easy as going to an awesome concert or telling your friends about a new band you’ve discovered.
During fall break, I went home to the small town of Camas, Washington where I got to hang out with the guys of Medium Size Kids, an incredibly talented local band. Band members John Doyle, Shane Moffett and Joseph Kashas work hard to write amazing songs and put on entertaining live performances. They also have two awesome music videos for their songs Wake Up and Forgetting Goodbye.
Local bands like Medium Size Kids thrive because of support from their fans and community members. Here are some ways you can support your favorite local musicians:
- Go to concerts! Click here to find upcoming shows in the Tempe area.
- Buy merchandise. Not only does “merch” help the band financially, it’s also a great way to advertise. Buy a t-shirt and wear it proudly or buy a CD for a friend that has similar music taste. Purchase your favorite band’s albums, rather than downloading them for free. You can find the Medium Size Kids EP on iTunes (hint, hint).
- Use social media to help promote local music. Whether you’re on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or YouTube, tell your followers about how much fun you had at a concert or the great new song you just heard. Also, follow your favorite bands on social media and pass their updates along to your followers. Who knows, you might just help a follower discover their new favorite band!
It can be difficult for small-town musicians to get their band off the ground, but with the support of their community, anything is possible!
